More Coping from Quilt in Progress

I decided to explain how I’m coping without a rotary cutter and mat. Yes, it’s like the days when I first started quilting. I don’t always want to measure, and luckily with the pouches I’m making I really don’t have to.

For this cat pouch I eyeballed the size of the cat fabric I wanted, then cut to the size I felt looked good. I centered the fabric by finding and marking the center of the batting/backing and the cat fabric, then pinning in place.

The blue accents to the side were just cut ...

Now Butterflies from Quilt in Progress

Pinterest is wonderful and yet it can suck all the time out of your day. I open Pinterest to find ideas for making inventory for the flea market. I found these Origami butterflies and I felt challenged to successfully make some. What I found is that the photos and explanations didn’t make sense to me at the final steps. I had to look at more than 5 different blogs (I lost track of how many exactly) before I found one I could follow to the end.

So that I don’t frustrate anyone in the way I was frustrated ...

Coping and compensating from Quilt in Progress

Early in December I got another devastating diagnosis – this time it’s an aggressive Leukemia. I’ve been away from home since Dec. 9, with the exception of 2 days in January. I must stay within 30 minutes of the cancer treatment center and my home is much farther away than that.

I’ll be here until the end of May/early June. Since I have my sewing machine, and I didn’t want to waste opportunity, I bought fabric, needles, thread, notions, zippers, and more. I even found someone selling a pound of fabric strips from bolt ends, great ...

Pandemic Porch Quilt Show, Day 20: Rolling Pansies from Gefilte Quilt

I made this quilt in the 90s, finishing the work of an unknown quiltmaker.

It started as a flea market find: a metal cookie tin, full of petals and leaves. Many petals were beautifully turned under with a lovely, even basting stitch in thick white thread. I couldn't bear to take the maker's stitches out, so I left them in place whenever possible.

This "pansy" is a traditional quilting motif, from the 1930s I think. The fabrics - primarily calico florals - look like they're from the 1960s. Each flower has six components, 5 petals, plus one leaf. The ...

Buttoned up from Celtic Thistle Stitches

Time for another Endeavourers reveal. This quarter rather than all of us working to the same theme Janine and Catherine switched things up a bit. Each of us had to send something to inspire this quarter's piece to a partner, whose name was drawn from the proverbial hat.

My fellow Endeavourer, Gwen, who blogs at Textile Ranger, sent me this glorious array of buttons! What a great jumping off point for several flights of fancy :)

Penny Rugs, Suffolk puffs, Medallion quilts were all considered and discarded.

This is what I eventually created. I am calling it a "Memory Keeper ...
